A Christmas countdown tells you how much time is left. A Christmas plan tells you what to do with it. The countdown is fun to watch; the plan is what keeps December calm. This guide shows how to use both.
How the live countdown works
The Christmas countdown page, found under the Time menu, counts down to midnight at the start of December 25 using the clock and time zone set on your device. That means a friend in another time zone sees the countdown to their own local midnight, not yours. After Christmas passes, it automatically switches to the next year's date.
This is called a wall-clock target: it aims for a time on the local clock, wherever you are. It differs from a single shared moment, like a video call starting at 3pm New York time, which happens at different local times around the world. For Christmas morning, a wall-clock target is what most people want.
Why a paper checklist as well
A countdown cannot hold your gift list or tell you when to mail cards. A paper checklist on a monthly calendar shows each task on a specific day. Crossing tasks off is also satisfying, and the whole family can see what is left.
Work backward from December 25
Start at Christmas and ask what must be done before it, and how long each thing takes. Here is an example for 2026, when Christmas Day is a Friday.
| Date | Task | How it was chosen |
|---|---|---|
| Sun Nov 29 | Make gift list and budget | About four weeks out, before December gets busy |
| Sat Dec 5 | Order gifts that ship | Well before typical shipping cutoffs; check your stores' real dates |
| Sat Dec 12 | Mail cards | About two weeks before Christmas |
| Sat Dec 19 | Wrap gifts | The last full weekend before Christmas |
| Tue Dec 22 | Grocery shopping | Close to the day, avoiding the busiest final days |
| Thu Dec 24 | Christmas Eve, nothing new scheduled | Buffer for anything that slipped |
These dates are examples, not shipping promises. Carriers and stores publish their own cutoff dates each year; look those up and move your “order” day earlier if needed.
Setting up your calendar
- In the maker, choose Classic Monthly. Monthly calendars offer 1, 3, 6, or 12 months; there is no two-month option.
- For November and December together, choose start month November and 3 months, which prints November, December, and January. Or create each month separately.
- Leave US holidays on to show Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
- Tap each task day and type a short note, then download and print.
Make your own countdown
For a different event, like a holiday party or a family visit, the countdown maker lets you set a title, date, and time, choose a style, and share a link.
Make a custom countdownCommon mistakes
- Watching the countdown instead of planning. Spend five minutes on the checklist first.
- Leaving shipping to mid-December.
- Scheduling big tasks on Christmas Eve. Keep it as a buffer.
